What is a good email open rate?

Realistic email open rate benchmarks, why the "average" is less useful than you think, and practical ways to get more people opening your emails.

It’s the question every sender asks: “Is my open rate any good?” Here’s an honest answer, plus how to improve it.

The rough benchmark

For most senders, a healthy open rate sits somewhere around 20% to 40%. Click rates are usually much lower, often 2% to 5%, and that’s completely normal.

But here’s the thing: averages are nearly useless for judging your emails. Open rates swing wildly by industry, audience, and how you built your list. A tight list of 200 superfans will crush the “average” of a list of 50,000 cold contacts.

What actually matters: your own trend

Instead of chasing someone else’s number, watch your own over time:

  • Going up? You’re doing something right, keep it up.
  • Slowly dropping? Time to clean your list or freshen your content.

Your last few sends are a far better benchmark than any industry chart.

Why open rates aren’t exact

Open tracking works by loading a tiny invisible image. Some email apps (notably Apple Mail) block or preload that image, so your real open rate is often higher than what you see. That’s why clicks are the more reliable signal of genuine interest. See Understand your campaign stats.

How to get more opens

  1. Write a better subject line. Clear and specific beats clever and vague. No ALL CAPS or “FREE!!!”, those hurt opens and land you in spam.
  2. Use a recognizable From name. People open emails from senders they know.
  3. Send to people who want it. A clean, opted-in list opens far more than a bought one. See What is double opt-in.
  4. Land in the inbox first. You can’t get opened from the spam folder. See Why emails go to spam.
  5. Remove dead subscribers. People who never open drag your rate down and hurt your reputation.

Bottom line

Don’t obsess over hitting a magic number. A smaller, engaged list with a 45% open rate beats a huge list at 8% every single time. Focus on quality, and the rate follows.
