Tags and segments explained
Learn the difference between tags and segments in TinyCourier and how to use them to send the right email to the right people.
Sending everyone the same email works for a while. But the more you can send the right email to the right people, the better your results. That’s what tags and segments are for.
Tags: labels you stick on people
A tag is a simple label you add to a subscriber, like customer, newsletter, or webinar-signup. A person can have as many tags as you like.
You add tags:
- During an import (apply them to everyone in the file).
- On a subscriber’s profile.
- Automatically through a signup form.
Think of tags as sticky notes. You decide who gets which note.
Segments: smart, automatic groups
A segment is a live group built from rules, not labels you stick on by hand. You describe who you want, and TinyCourier keeps the group up to date for you.
For example, a segment could be:
Everyone tagged
customerAND who lives in Germany AND who opened an email in the last 30 days.
Because it’s rule-based, the group updates itself. As people match (or stop matching) the rules, they move in and out automatically.
Which should I use?
- Tag when you want to mark people yourself (“these came from my checkout”).
- Segment when you want an automatic group based on what’s true about them (location, activity, tags, signup date, and more).
The best part: segments can use tags as one of their rules. They work together.
Sending to a group
When you send a campaign, you choose who gets it:
- Tags: anyone with the tags you pick.
- Segments: a saved segment you built.
- Custom: build a one-off rule right there.
- Everyone: your whole active list.
Start simple with tags. Reach for segments when you want to get more targeted.
